        National Earth Science Week is being celebrated in Kalgoorlie Boulder this week. An interactive display focussing on Earth Science related careers has been placed in the William Grundt Library to raise awareness of the variety of careers available in this area.

        A very successful Earth Science Career display was put together by the Mining Hall of Fame and the Geological Survey of WA as part of the Careers Expo for the Kalgoorlie Boulder Science Awareness Festival.

        The Mining Hall of Fame has joined with the (WA) Department of Industry and Resources to provide a booth at the Careers Expo for secondary school students held on 16th & 17th September as part of the Kalgoorlie Science Festival. The Science Festival is a pilot event organised by the Kids Science State program, a joint initiative of Scitech and the Rio Tinto WA Future Fund.

Chinese Gardens - The Construction

Celebrating a great relationship and cultural exchange
The first sod is turned
The first sod is turned in the development of the Chinese Garden of Remembrance at the Mining Hall of Fame in Kalgoorlie. Through the support of the Simon Lee Foundation, the WA Chinese Chamber of Commerce and the Federal Government the garden has flourish to become a place of contemplation and a symbol of the multiculturalism of the minerals industry.

Workers from the Beijing Good Construction Company labour in the heat of the Western Australian summer to install the tiles on the pagodas in the Chinese Garden of Remembrance (January 2005).

A new pagoda is taking shape in the Chinese Garden of Remembrance. It is the largest of three pagodas.
Chinese Craftsmen arrive in Australia
During the construction
Our visiting Chinese Craftsmen constructed these pagodas by hand in the traditional manner, no power tools has been used during construction. The results of their skill, teamwork and craftsmanship are now on display for all visitors to admire.

Chinese craftsmen and women, working for the Beijing Good Construction Company in China, hand craft the pieces that now form the elaborate pagodas around the Chinese Garden of Remembrance.

A great accomplishment
The Chinese Garden of Remembrance was built in the spirit of cooperation with input from local and international tradesmen. Local tradesmen have poured the cement which will form the foundations of the handcrafted pagodas. These are to be constructed by Chinese craftsmen and now form the stunning architectural features within the garden set against the stark semi-arid terrain.

The Garden of Remembrance was officially opened on 25 May 2007 by the Consul-General of the People’s Republic of China, Mr. Li Shugang.

In celebration a special luncheon was held for dignitaries and sponsors from the Goldfields, Western Australia and the Chinese Embassy. The celebrations included a truly multi-cultural concert with many entertainers Aboriginal dance troupe, Australian Chinese Music Ensemble, WA Police Brass Band, Lion Dance Troupe, Scottish Highland Dancers, an operatic singer and the Chung Wah Dance Troupe.  The concert highlights what the Remembrance Gardens represent the many cultures that have migrated to Australia because of our rich mining industry.
