        National Earth Science Week is being celebrated in Kalgoorlie Boulder this week. An interactive display focussing on Earth Science related careers has been placed in the William Grundt Library to raise awareness of the variety of careers available in this area.

        A very successful Earth Science Career display was put together by the Mining Hall of Fame and the Geological Survey of WA as part of the Careers Expo for the Kalgoorlie Boulder Science Awareness Festival.

        The Mining Hall of Fame has joined with the (WA) Department of Industry and Resources to provide a booth at the Careers Expo for secondary school students held on 16th & 17th September as part of the Kalgoorlie Science Festival. The Science Festival is a pilot event organised by the Kids Science State program, a joint initiative of Scitech and the Rio Tinto WA Future Fund.

Make your visit memorable by going underground with a retired miner, marvel at the gold pour demonstration, strike gold in the panning ponds, explore the galleries and exhibits and take a relaxing stroll through the Chinese Garden of Remembrance.

Venture 36 metres underground with a retired miner.  Experience what it was like for the original miners, who worked with a pick, shovel wheelbarrow and winch during. 

Watch a gold pour demonstrations in the original 1920s Paringa Mine Gold Room.

Exploring the past by wandering through the historic precinct.  Wander into the National Bank, Duketon Hotel and the miners' huts.

Try your luck at finding a nugget at the gold panning ponds.  By the end of the day you may not have struck it rich but you may have got the bug - gold fever. 

Originally pegged in 1893, the same year that Paddy Hannan discovered gold on the Golden Mile.  The Hannans North Lease provides a glimpse into a centruy of mining in the Eastern Goldfields.

Meet prospectors like James Smith, who discovered the richest tin deposit of the time in 1871 in Tasmania and the modern prospector, Mark Creasy. Listen in on the conversations of prospectors discussing the changing times.

Delve into the matters of law and money.  Gain an understanding of the responsibilities of the government and Industry in using and monitoring Australian mineral resources, and the laws, taxes and royalties associated with the workings of this industry and our government.

A gallery for young people aged from 3 to 103.

Enter the first of two zones in the gallery where you can:

  • Have fun and be inspired and educated by the workings and the people involved in the minerals industry.
  • Be environmentally aware as you drive towards an exploration drilling site.
  • Become the mine manager and make your mine work efficiently.
  • Experience daily events of mine site employees.
  • Explore for minerals from space using maps and geophysics.

The second zone houses a specially designed area where our Education Officers work with school groups and teachers.

Try your hand at games and puzzles and access classroom activities in the Teachers and Students pages.

Navigate the winding pathways, a waterfall, lake and pavilions that follow centuries old traditions of landscape design offering a peaceful and tranquil oasis in the heart of an unforgiving arid landscape.

The Garden is a great place to relax over a picnic lunch or to reenergise at the end of the day. The Garden has become very popular for functions, particularly weddings.

Eremophila commonly known as the Emu Bush

Wander through the Eremophila garden that has many of the 350 species of Eremophila that have been identified in Australia. Look out for emus as the fruit of the bush is one of their favourite foods.

View the garden from the York Grey Granite benches and appreciate the varied habits, from groundcover to small shrubs, of this diverse group of colourful plants. These increasingly popular plants are able to tolerate a wide range of soil types and climatic conditions and many species are of value as horticultural specimens and ornamental plants.
