Nominating an InducteeAn inductee will be a person who has made a significant contribution to some aspect of mining or a contribution as a member of a community existing as place or network and linked to mining. Inductees might also have made an indirect contribution to mining and knowledge of mining by way of involvement in finance, journalism, research, mining history, academic work in universities, technical colleges or Schools of Mines, government, mining peak bodies (chambers of mines, etc.), inventions, or by entrepreneurial activity. Nominees are inducted by category of achievement. In a number of cases such as the joint discovery of a particular field, or the joint or parallel development of a radically new technology, it will be appropriate for the Board to consider nominations of a group rather than individuals, as the collective effort or contribution is that which will be recognised. The Hall of Fame seeks to ensure the widest acknowledgement of contributions to mining in Australia. It believes that it is important that the richness and diversity of Australian culture and society is represented among inductees. Importantly, representation should not be artificially created, paternalistic or tokenistic and thus be a historical; nor should choices of inductees serve to reinforce the cast of stereotypical or traditional roles. The geographical area in which the person has made her or his contribution to mining is not limited to the mainland of Australia or Tasmania. It may include territories or mandated areas (of the pre federation Colonies or of the Commonwealth of Australia), including the Australian Antarctic Territory. Nominations of individuals or groups of individuals deemed worthy of induction to the Hall of Fame can be submitted to the convenor of the advisory committee Dr Patrick Bertola or to the project manager for the Hall of Fame, Norma Latchford. Nominations should include:
Note: Persons nominated to the Board but who are not included in the induction for any year, may be nominated again. An Advisory Committee of mining historians, researchers or experts will propose to the Board a list of people for the initial induction. In general, this first, 'historical' group will be drawn from nominees who have been deceased for some time. In years following the opening of the Hall of Fame and at some interval, the Board may choose others for induction into the Hall of Fame. While in general it is likely that inductees will be people who have been deceased for at least five years, the Board may choose to induct people who are still living but who are retired from active involvement in mining. The Board will establish a desirable upper limit for the number of inductees in any one year. It is not incumbent upon the Board to induct any person in a particular year. Nominees will be inducted at the time of the official opening of the Hall and in subsequent years or periods at a special ceremony or function.
A special gallery within the Hall of Fame complex has been set aside to recognise the outstanding contributions of inductees. In this gallery there will be a single, large, commissioned work generically representing the inductees and recognising their collective contributions to mining. Along the 'pathway' of visitors through the gallery, brass plaques will highlight the names and details of the principal achievement[s] of individuals inductees or groups. Finally, along the walled area of the gallery, the individual and group achievements will be honoured in a thematic way: in the form of artefacts that create an atmosphere and reflect the nature of the contributions. In the future, it is proposed that a linked digital interface will provide further detail on these thematic representations of individual or groups of inductees.
The notes above [Inductees] outlines the general criteria for nomination. At present, the categories under which inductees can be nominated and represented in the Hall are:
Where a person has made a contribution in more than one area, the advisory group will recommend to the Board the category in which it considers the person has made the greatest contribution. Suggestions about additional categories can be made to the convenor of the advisory committee or to the project manager for the Hall of Fame.
