        National Earth Science Week is being celebrated in Kalgoorlie Boulder this week. An interactive display focussing on Earth Science related careers has been placed in the William Grundt Library to raise awareness of the variety of careers available in this area.

        The Mining Hall of Fame has joined with the (WA) Department of Industry and Resources to provide a booth at the Careers Expo for secondary school students held on 16th & 17th September as part of the Kalgoorlie Science Festival. The Science Festival is a pilot event organised by the Kids Science State program, a joint initiative of Scitech and the Rio Tinto WA Future Fund.

There is nowhere like “Kal”!!  Kal’s unique heritage permeates the town and therefore retains its prosperous and pioneering character.  A major mining centre, WA’s second biggest city is vital to the state’s and Australia’s economic sustainability. Only in Kalgoorlie can visitors see the world’s biggest working open cut mine and visit WA’s largest indoor pool.   Kalgoorlie certainly is a great place for students to discover the past, present and future of our country.

What can the student do in Kalgoorlie?

There are plenty of attractions!

  • Marvel at the world’s biggest open cut mine, aptly named the Superpit.
  • Visit the Western Australian Museum where you can explore historic buildings, learn about sandalwood and local Goldfield’s history.
  • Follow the stories of CY O’Connor’s Golden Pipeline.  Go to Mt Charlotte lookout the final pumping station.  100 years on and the pipeline is still a marvelous human feat.
  • Discover the role of the Goldfield’s community in protecting Australia at the Goldfield’s War Museum.
  • Wander through Karlkurla Park a rehabilitated environment.
  • Talk to the Cookees, and have a run at Hammond Park.
  • Visit the Royal Flying Doctor Service
  • And of course experience the Australian Prospector and Miners Hall of Fame, where student will be accompanied by an Education Officer to try their luck panning for gold, marvel at a gold pour and experience life as an olden day underground miner as they descend 36 metres in a real gold mine.
  • Swim at the Oasis, WA’s largest indoor swimming pool.
  •  Kalgoorlie School of the Air, see how it all works and watch a real lesson. 
  • Stroll the Arboretum; learn about the natural bush land from the interpretive displays.

With a population of 30,000 people the facilities are in abundance. 
Kalgoorlie has an airport, train station, ambulance service, ATMs, most major banks, chemists, fuel, golf courses, hospital, swimming pool, all major fast foods, post offices, supermarkets, restaurants, mechanical services, department stores, and police.
